And 4 for the ladies of VC Mamer

For the fourth time in succession, the VC Mamer women’s team won the Luxembourg Volleyball Cup. With a score of 4:1 (25:16, 13:25, 25:20, 25:10), the ladies beat RSR Walferdange in Strassen.

After winning the first set by a clear margin (25:16), Walferdange fought back in the second (25:13) to keep the suspense alive. The crowd was treated to a very tight third set, before Mamer regained the upper hand in a decisive fourth set.

In the stands, where Mayor Luc Feller, Alderman Roger Negri, Alderwoman Francine Closener and members of the communal council were also present, the victory was celebrated with enthusiasm.

Even Finance Minister Gilles Roth didn’t miss the opportunity to come and cheer on the Mamer players.

At the end, the joy was overwhelming. A very proud mayor, accompanied by his colleagues from the aldermanic college, presented the medals to the lucky winners.

A micro-forest in Brill Park

A micro-forest in Brill Park

Brill Park in Mamer has been enriched by an innovative new project.

On the initiative of Greenpeace, a micro-forest was planted: 900 young native trees and shrubs were planted in a 300 square meter area.

Within three years, these plants should evolve to form a mini-forest, an ecosystem designed to promote biodiversity and operating without human intervention. Greenpeace launched a large-scale appeal for donations for this project, and over 200 people took part, around a quarter of them from the commune of Mamer.

Inspired by the model developed in the 1970s by Japan’s Akira Miyawaki, micro-forests are designed to green small areas in urban environments.

A concept which, according to Mayor Luc Feller, accompanied by Aldermen Roger Negri and Ed Buchette, and Alderman Francine Closener, could well be replicated elsewhere in the commune.

Patronised by the Municipality of Mamer, the ceremony was a source of pride for Mayor Luc Feller and Alderman for Culture Ed Buchette, who were delighted to see so many children and teenagers from their locality taking to the stage.

In his speech, Luc Feller described this annual graduation ceremony as a highlight, not only for the pupils and the teaching staff, but also for the municipalities, which see it as the fruit of their collaboration with the Union Grand-Duc Adolphe.

Addressing the young musicians, the mayor pointed out that this diploma was not only a testimony to talent, but also to commitment and perseverance, all qualities of which they could be justly proud.

A fine gesture of solidarity towards children with cancer

A fine gesture of solidarity towards children with cancer

Shortly before the Carnival vacations, four pupils from cycle 4.2 in Mamer, supported by their classmates, presented a cheque for €1,061.88 to the Kriibskrank Kanner Foundation.

During the summer, the girls had, on their own initiative, made bracelets and decorations, which they sold at the school fête and privately, to raise money for a good cause. They raised €561.88.

But their commitment didn’t stop there: Amélie, Lara, Maëlys and Marie also sent a handwritten letter to the Collège échevinal presenting their project, and the Collège added the sum of €500.

Mateusz Buraczyk, representative of the Kriibskrank Kanner Foundation, came to the school during class to receive the cheque, express his sincere thanks and explain to the whole class the important work the Foundation does for children and teenagers with cancer, and their families.

On the school campus, a cheque for 778 euros was recently presented to Téléthon Luxembourg, while non-perishable foodstuffs and hygiene products were donated to the Cent Buttek association.

Mayor Luc Feller, accompanied by aldermen Roger Negri and Ed Buchette, praised the commitment of the children and teaching staff.

Capellen school president Maryse Weis-Baden recalled that this kind of solidarity action is a tradition in Capellen and Holzem. Funds for the Telethon were raised at the Christmas market in Mamer and the St. Nicholas market at the school, thanks to the “Sapin de l’Espoir”. The Telethon supports research into genetic and rare diseases.

Students and teachers collected food and hygiene items for Cent Buttek in a “reverse Advent calendar”, where everyone brought one product per day instead of receiving a small gift. In the “Cent Butteker” stores, people on low incomes can shop at greatly reduced prices.

Round table on the challenges facing women’s sport

Round table on the challenges facing women’s sport

As part of International Women’s Sports Day, the Commission for Sport and Leisure organised a round table discussion at the Mamer Schlass.

At the event, a number of sportswomen shared their experiences and successes, as well as the obstacles they face. All were unanimous: there are still glaring inequalities in the world of sport. Whether in terms of recognition of their achievements, public visibility or financial support, sportswomen are still less well regarded than their male counterparts.

Betty Noël, captain of the FC Mamer women’s team, Katrin Kohl, Paralympic cycling athlete, Shefi Xhaferaj, ultra-trail runner, and Alexandra Feltgen, parkour specialist, illustrated these remarks with concrete examples from their daily lives, at the microphone of Joëlle Kirsch. Although progress has been made, the road to real equality between men’s and women’s sport is still a long one, they concluded.

Mayor Luc Feller, accompanied by Alderman Ed Buchette, Alderwoman Francine Closener and other members of the local council, stressed in his welcome speech that, for an inclusive society, it is essential to continue working towards equality, not only between the sexes, but also in the recognition of performance.

The long-awaited project is a major achievement for the municipality, as Mayor Luc Feller, accompanied by Aldermen Roger Negri and Ed Buchette, pointed out.

The modern infrastructure will enable all pupils in the municipality’s primary schools to learn to swim before the end of their primary education. It will also provide local sports clubs, including the Trispeed triathlon club, with a suitable environment in which to train.

From January 2025, the first swimming lessons will be held in the new facility. Later in the year, the pool will also be open to the public as part of a test phase.

The pool features a 25-metre main pool and a 15-metre training pool with a height-adjustable floor to facilitate learning and training. Three lifeguards are on hand at all times to ensure the safety of users.

During the construction of the building, which includes a basement sports hall for table tennis and an airtramp, particular attention was paid to an environmentally-friendly design that meets energy class A standards. Access to the building and entry to the water have been designed to be accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Together with their teachers, the pupils had carefully prepared the event: they sang traditional songs, played music and even danced. All of which delighted Saint-Nicolas, who was visibly enchanted and handed out his bags of sweets with particular attention.

It’s that time of year again, when the Kleeschen and the Houseker are out and about.

Once again this year, a letter arrived in the wonderful land of heaven, in which the Syndicat d’initiative et tourisme invited the two gentlemen to visit the schools of the Municipality of Mamer.

The first stage of the visit took place at the Kinneksbond in Mamer. Together with their teachers, the children had prepared well, presenting drawings and songs that were also appreciated by the Mayor Luc Feller, the President of the School Commission, Nadine Schmid, and the members of the SIT.

Many of the things written in the book made little eyes widen, little hearts flutter and, above all, raised the question of how the Kleeschen and the Houseker could know about all the adventures and misadventures. At the end, however, everyone received their Titchen filled with treats.

In 2023, 26 people lost their lives on Luxembourg roads; in 2022, a further 36 people were killed in road accidents. Against this backdrop, the Commission for Mobility of the Municipality of Mamer had organised an evening debate on road safety and how everyone can help to improve it.

Luc Lamborelle, from the Technical Investigation Administration, explained the work of this public body, which analyses the technical causes of accidents and makes recommendations to avoid similar incidents in the future.

Isabelle Medinger of the Sécurité routière, spoke about the awareness and prevention campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of the road, as well as the data analysis that Sécurité routière carries out on the basis of statistics in order to identify risk areas.

Michaël Federici of the Association des Victimes de la Route (AVR) addressed the topic from the point of view of road accident victims and their families, and presented the support services offered by the association. Finally, a person who was unintentionally involved in a road accident shared its experiences.

Mayor Luc Feller, accompanied by Alderman Roger Negri and Alderwoman Francine Closener, emphasised in his introduction at the start of the evening that road safety is an important issue for the municipality. This commitment is reflected in the consistent development of the multimodal concept, as well as in ongoing changes to the municipal traffic regulations to improve safety both on and off the road.

6. Festival of Inclusion

6. Festival of Inclusion

For people with special needs, inclusive measures are a necessity if they are to participate fully in social life. However, all citizens benefit from these measures, which provide additional comfort and safety in everyday life.

The Inclusion Festival, organised for the sixth time by the Maison Citoyenne de la Commune de Mamer in collaboration with the Commission pour l’Inclusion Sociale, provided a concrete illustration of this concept. On the Kinneksbond site, various workshops were offered by organisations active in the social field.

Mayor Luc Feller, Aldermen Roger Negri and Ed Buchette and Alderwoman Francine Closener showed a keen interest in these initiatives by carefully visiting each of the workshops.

Before the official opening of the festivities, the municipality was pleased to reward the commitment of the seven participating organisations by presenting them with a cheque for 500 euros each. This symbolic gesture was in recognition of their essential contribution to the social field.

High-growing fruit trees are important to the landscape and also provide an interesting habitat for many animals. Unfortunately, many fruit trees are no longer cared for properly these days, as knowledge of how to prune them has disappeared.

That’s why the Commune of Mamer, in conjunction with the Sicona nature conservation syndicate, held a pruning course for fruit trees, which attracted a great deal of interest.

Around fifty people, including Alderman Roger Negri, took part in the course, which consisted of a theoretical introduction at the Kinneksbond festival hall and a practical part with exercises in the Mimmelsratt orchard.

The communities of Mamer and Kehlen had jointly invited their local associations to an information meeting on the subject of “Green Events” on the one hand, and the new waste law on the other, which also had repercussions on the organization of public events due to various new obligations.

A member of staff from Oekozenter Pafendall presented the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity’s “Green Events” project and explained the new legal provisions for waste management at public events, which will come into force on January 1, 2025.

The aim is to promote a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly approach to organizing local events, for example by avoiding disposable packaging and crockery wherever possible, offering more local, regional and organic food and drink, and introducing waste sorting.

The Oekozenter Pafendall and the SuperDrécksKëscht are responsible for assisting associations wishing to embark on the path of “Green Events” in all their endeavors, and if the conditions are met, the association in question can apply for a one-off grant of 1,500 euros from the Ministry.

Conference on universal accessibility of public areas

Conference on universal accessibility of public areas

Improved accessibility to public places brings benefits for all. For people with reduced mobility, it is essential to enable them to participate fully in social life; for other citizens, it guarantees greater comfort and safety in their daily lives. This was the message conveyed by sector players at the conference on the law on universal accessibility of places open to the public, held at the Mamer Schlass. Mamer was the first municipality in the country to organize such a conference. Minister Max Hahn and Mayor Luc Feller called for the development of accessible infrastructures to be seen as an enrichment for all. Around 15% of the national population is affected by some form of disability, making access to public places and services often difficult. Experts from the Ministry, the National Center of Competence for the Accessibility of Buildings (ADAPTH) and Info-Handicap detailed aspects of the law. In video testimonials, Katrin Kohl and Claude Keup highlighted the obstacles that people with physical disabilities encounter in their daily lives when trying to move around independently.
Traditional fair opens in Mamer

Traditional fair opens in Mamer

“Et ass Kiermes am Duerf” in Mamer. Mayor Luc Feller, accompanied by alderman Ed Buchette, alderwoman Francine Closener and members of the town council, officially opened the traditional Mamer fair. As every year, the Harmonie Gemeng Mamer played the ” Hämmelsmarsch ” and the famous Luxembourg song “Et ass Kiermes am Duerf”.

In his speech, the mayor stressed the importance of this fine tradition, which enables the commune’s inhabitants not only to have a good time, but also to meet other people. He thanked the organizers, fairgoers and musicians for their commitment.

Bumper cars, a merry-go-round, trampolines, a shooting gallery, duck fishing… there’s something for everyone in the Nic. Frantz sports hall. And no one will go hungry or thirsty.

The Mamer fair continues until October 27, 2024.

The non-profit organization “Sauvons Bambi Lëtzebuerg” is active in the commune of Mamer.

The association “Sauvons Bambi Lëtzebuerg”, which is already active in the commune of Mamer, had organized an information meeting at the Mamer Schlass to present its work and recruit additional volunteers. The mission of this non-profit organization is to protect animals, particularly fawns, which retreat to meadows and fields in spring and risk being mutilated by agricultural machinery during the mowing season.

In consultation with farmers, the members of “Sauvons Bambi Lëtzebuerg” fly over the fields with a drone equipped with a thermal camera to locate the animals and bring them to safety, before the farm machinery passes. In 2023, 428 fawns were saved from certain death in the Belgian border region and in Luxembourg.

To be able to continue its work, “Sauvons Bambi Lëtzebuerg” is looking for new volunteers, who will be trained by the association. Interested parties can find out more at www.sauvonsbambi.lu or send an e-mail to contact@sauvonsbambi.lu.

Apple Day for the children of Cycle 2.2

Apple Day for the children of Cycle 2.2

During the ‘Apeldag’, pupils from cycles 2.2 of the fundamental schools Mamer and Capellen had the opportunity to make their own apple juice and discover how freshly picked fruit is transformed into a delicious sweet nectar.

Supervised by former school teachers and the local section of natur&ëmwelt, they were actively involved in the various stages of the process: sorting local apples, cutting, crushing, pressing, bottling and, of course, tasting.

Aldermen Roger Negri and Ed Buchette also attended to encourage the children and thank the organisers for this great initiative.

The Commission de la Famille et du Troisième Âge invited everyone to a tea dance in the Mamer Schlass village hall.

The invitation was well received. Many people of all ages turned out to have a good time. There was a lot of laughter. The dance floor was packed all afternoon. The Haemelmaous orchestra ensured a good time with its rich and varied program.

Mayor Luc Feller, alderman Ed Buchette and members of the municipal council also enjoyed the tea dance.

National Commemoration celebrations in the commune

National Commemoration celebrations in the commune

On the eve of National Commemoration Day, the commune of Mamer remembered the resistance of the Luxembourg people during the war years 1940-1945, and the victims who lost their lives for the homeland under the Nazi regime.

First in Holzem on the Place de la Résistance, then in Capellen along the Route d’Arel and finally in Mamer near the church, Mayor Luc Feller, Aldermen Roger Negri, Ed Buchette and Alderwoman Francine Closener, in the presence of members of the local council, representatives of associations and citizens, laid flowers at the monuments on behalf of the commune and the Enrôles de Force of Mamer, Capellen and Holzem, and symbolically bowed their heads before those who sacrificed their lives.

In his speech, Mayor Luc Feller recalled the collective resistance of the Luxembourg people against German occupation when, on October 10, 1941, over 90% of the population answered “Luxembourgish” three times to questions about their ethnicity, nationality and mother tongue in a forced referendum, known at the time as the “Personenbestandsaufnahme”.

It is this courageous act by the civilian population that is remembered on the day of the national commemoration. Had the result of this referendum been different at the time, Luxembourg would probably have ceased to exist after the war.

This National Commemoration Day is therefore also about remembering what happened in the past, because ‘those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it’, said the Mayor, quoting a speech made by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1948.

Pupils from the 1972 generation met up again

Pupils from the 1972 generation met up again

Former pupils of the 1972 generation at Mamer Primary School recently got together to spend a pleasant afternoon together.

The meeting was set for 3:00 p.m. at the Kinneksbond campus, where Mayor Luc Feller and Alderman Roger Negri welcomed the 36 or so participants, including a dozen teachers from the time. They invited them on a guided tour of the new buildings on the site. The former pupils discovered the new regional music school, the school swimming pool and the Maison Relais.

After this interesting visit, at around 7:00 pm, a convivial meal in a restaurant in Mamer was planned to round off the day.

An extraordinary concert for the whole family with Trio Maia

An extraordinary concert for the whole family with Trio Maia

The Citizens House of the commune had invited us to an extraordinary concert in the Mamer Schlass village hall.

An afternoon with Trio Maia is an immersive experience for the whole family, and much more than just a classical music performance.

Before the musicians began their instrumental performance, a storyteller captivated the young audience by telling the story of the works in appropriate words, supported by two stuffed mice.

She has made the world of classical music accessible and entertaining, evoking the lives of composers and the context of their creations.

The concept has paid off.

For over an hour, the adults, including Mayor Luc Feller and Alderman Ed Buchette, accompanied by members of the Communal Council and the Social Inclusion Commission, enjoyed the beautiful classical music, while the many children, comfortably seated on cushions in front of the stage, listened wisely, fascinated and captivated by the event.
