In 1995, a number of municipalities joined forces with the NGOs “Actions Solidarité Tiers Monde” and “Mouvement Écologique” to found the “Klima-Bündnis Lëtzebuerg/Luxembourg Climate Alliance “, whose motto was “Think globally, act locally”.

To date, the “Klima-Bündis Lëtzebuerg” network has 37 member municipalities. The member municipalities are working to protect the climate, with one of their goals being to achieve a sustainable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions within their municipal boundaries. In addition, municipal leaders are committed to supporting indigenous peoples in the Global South, who are most often affected by the harmful consequences of climate change.

Although each municipality acts independently, the exchange of information and experiences among the various member municipalities plays an important role in achieving the established goals. To protect the environment, the municipality also works to raise its citizens’ awareness of the relationship between consumption, the demand for natural resources, and the impact on the climate.
