After all of Saturday’s races were canceled due to the heat wave, the national cycling championship resumed on Sunday, with races for juniors, U23s, masters, and elite women taking place in the morning. At 9:30 a.m., the race began under temperatures that were, thankfully, lower than those of the previous days. In the elite women’s race, Marie Schreiber won the sprint ahead of Nina Berton, while Liv Wenzel rounded out the podium.
The afternoon was entirely devoted to the men’s races, with the U23 and elite categories taking the start. In the elite category, after a thrilling race, Arthur Kluckers claimed the championship title, ahead of Mathieu Kockelmann and Mats Wenzel.
The mayor of Mamer, Luc Feller, aldermen Roger Negri and Ed Buchette, alderwoman Francine Closener, and several members of the municipal council cheered on the cyclists. Sports Minister Martine Hansen and Finance Minister Gilles Roth also watched the races in person. Together with Mamer Mayor Luc Feller and officials from the cycling federation, they presented medals to the top three finishers.
Despite the summer-like temperatures, many spectators lined the course. The atmosphere was excellent all day long.
As part of the championship, a little surprise was in store for Bruno Mergen, a member of the organizing committee. In recognition of his 60 years of dedication to cycling, he received a magnificent crystal trophy, presented by VC Mamerdall and ACT Kopstal.
