Mamer, the first Smoke-Free Commune

In the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, more than a quarter of the population over the age of 16 smokes. Studies have shown that smoking is dangerous to health, not only for smokers themselves, but also for those around them. That’s why there are a growing number of initiatives aimed at reducing tobacco consumption. One such initiative is “Génération Sans Tabac” (Generation Without Tobacco).

The Commune of Mamer, aware of its responsibility towards the population and future generations, signed up to this label in May 2023. It is the first commune in Luxembourg to be awarded the “Smoke-Free Commune” label. The agreement was signed by the Mayor, Gilles Roth, and the two aldermen, Roger Negri and Luc Feller, in Mamer.

Growing up smoke-free

By obtaining the label, the Commune of Mamer undertakes to promote the “Smoke-free Generation” strategy. This strategy was launched in March 2023 by the Fondation Cancer and its 37 partners, with the aim of making today’s young people the first generation to live in a smoke-free world by 2040.

The “Smoke-Free Generation” label is divided into three levels: bronze, silver and gold. To improve the label, a number of criteria must be met.

The “Génération Sans Tabac” strategy is based on six pillars:

  • an annual increase in the price of tobacco and similar products ;
  • the organisation of information and awareness-raising campaigns among young people to prevent smoking;
  • a ban on all types of tobacco advertising;
  • reducing the availability of tobacco products;
  • protecting people who suffer from passive smoking;
  • promoting quitting smoking and supporting people who want to stop smoking.
