In 1995, a number of municipalities joined forces with the NGOs “Actions Solidarité Tiers Monde” and “Mouvement Écologique” to found the “Klima-Bündnis Lëtzebuerg/Luxembourg Climate Alliance “, whose motto was “Think globally, act locally”.
To date, the “Klima-Bündis Lëtzebuerg” network has 37 member municipalities. The member municipalities are working to protect the climate, with one of their objectives being to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in their municipalities on a long-term basis. They are also committed to supporting the indigenous peoples of the South, who are the ones most affected by the negative consequences of climate change.
Although each local authority acts independently, the exchange of information and experience between the various local authority members plays an important role in achieving the objectives set. In order to protect the environment, the local authority is also committed to raising its citizens’ awareness of the relationship between consumption, the need for natural resources and the consequences for the climate.
