Compulsory schooling
All children aged between 4 and 16 (18 from 2026) who have completed their schooling by September 1 must be enrolled in a school, as stipulated by the law of 20/07/2023 on compulsory education.
Primary education
No later than April 15, or at the time of registration with the commune, the burgomaster informs the persons holding parental authority over the minor registered with the commune and who reaches the age of four before September 1, of the start of compulsory schooling.
It also informs them of the minor’s compulsory enrolment in a public basic education establishment in the school district of his or her place of residence.
Secondary education
From the moment the minor meets the conditions for admission to secondary education, the persons with parental authority ensure that the minor fulfills the school obligation.
Children educated abroad
If your child is attending school abroad, the law on compulsory education stipulates that you must send a certificate of enrolment to the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth to certify that your child is complying with compulsory education requirements.
